With everything going on in the world right now, having health insurance as an expat is more important than ever. I’m going to discuss four options to receive healthcare in México.
🏥Travel health insurance – Best for short term travel while you are in México or another country on a non permanent basis. It’s typically Inexpensive in comparison to private insurance but coverage can be spotty in my experience.
🏥 Consultó Medico (Consultoríos)- They are small doctors offices often affiliated with pharmacies. It can be best for small medical issues in which you may need a prescription. The doctor can do a quick examination and assess your medical needs. Médicos can be found in small practices throughout México, 24 hour pharmacies, and Walmarts. They are very convenient and affordable.
🏥 Public health insurance- The national healthcare program in México is called Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). Typically everyone in the public hospitals will speak Spanish and things can be terribly slow. In order to enroll on the system, you must be a legal resident and enrollment price vary by age.
🏥 Private health insurance- It is ideal for expats and long term residents in México. Provides access to private hospitals, shorter waiting times, top notch quality care, and English speaking doctors. It can be more costly depending on several factors.
Sound off below. Have you factored healthcare into your budget for your move to México?
